The city of Johannesburg in South Africa is showcasing a unique student housing option that incorporates vibrantly painted storage containers.

Used shipping or storage containers usually just end up taking lots of space and are a major eyesore. However, the giant boxes can easily be revamped and reused to act as a functional living space.

The city of Johannesburg in South Africa is showcasing a unique student housing option that incorporates vibrantly painted storage containers. The boxes were lifted into place and attached to an existing structure to offer extra accommodation and room.

The rectangular units are stacked on the top and side of several unused grain silos, which have also been converted into housing, and offer panoramic views of the landscape. The expansive structure called Mill Junction holds 375 individual apartments along with game rooms, lounges, computer rooms and libraries.

Mill Junction’s 11 story structure stands a little over 130 feet tall, and coupled with the bright colorful containers, makes it stand out against the usual city skyline.

Windows were cut into the sides of the metal units to offer students views of the city. Some of them even feature a balcony.

Local company, Citiq Property Managers, were responsible for successfully carrying out the Mill Junction project.
