I am a Canadian historian who has done a lot of research on Lydia Litvyak, There is strong evidence that Litvyak survived the war and possibly settled in Switzerland after the war. Soviet official sources like to present her as a hero who was killed during the war, whereas there is evidence that she had been imprisoned in a PoW camp and survived the war. I wonder why Litvyak's enthusiasts are so keen to claim that she was killed, as there is no valid proof that she didn't survive the war. Official Soviet sources do not identify her as being Jewish. There is evidence she had less kills than did her friend Budanova. Her final rank was NOT Second Lieutenant, but rather Senior Lieutenant.
