Feb. 11th, 1979 was a historic day in Iran. After months of massive protests, the Shah, a US-backed autocrat, was toppled from the throne. The forces loyal to the Shah were defeated, as many soldiers and police officers joined with Ayatollah Rouhollah Khomeini, the late leader of the Islamic Revolution. Political prisoners were released from prisons, and the Islamic Republic was born. In Iran, February 11th is celebrated as "The Islamic Revolution's Victorious Day."
