The El Salvadorian fisherman who spent more than a year adrift in the PacifiC Ocean is set to return to his country Tuesday if his health permits.

37-year-old Jose Alvarenga said he set sail on a fishing trip in December of 2012 but was blown out to sea.

He said he survived by drinking turtle blood and catching fish and birds with his bare hands.

Some have called into question whether Alvarenga's story was credible.

The foreign minister from El Salvador said right now Alvarenga's health is the most important.

(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) EL SALVADOR'S FOREIGN MINISTER JAIME MIRANDA, SAYING:

" I don't know, you can investigate to see if this is believable or not. What is certain is that we have found a Salvadoran of 37 years of age, who was born here in El Salvador with a complicated state of health with a need to return to the country and this is what we have done and this is our role."

Alvarenga was discovered on a remote atoll of the Marshall Island
