Fatal Aspen plane crash video could help investigators

Newly-released footage of a deadly plane crash in Aspen, Colorado earlier this month may provide clues as to what caused the the plane to "fall out of the sky," as one witness put it.

The edited video, captured on five infrared cameras at the Aspen-Pitkin County Airport show's the plane's second attempted landing after 30 mile-per-hour wind gusts forced the pilot to abort the first attempt.

Transcripts of the black box voice recorder show no mayday call from the pilots, though there was concern over the wind gusts.

An aviation consultant speaking to the ABC said it appears the plane came in too fast, slammed into the runway, then pitch up sharply, possibly causing a stall.

The aircraft, a mid-sized privately-owned Canadair CL-600 had flown from from Mexico and stopped in Tucson, Ariz., before crashing at the Aspen-Pitkin County Airport.

The dramatic explosion left a charred wreckage and claimed the life of the 54-year-old Mexican co-pilot. The pilot and a passenger, the two other men on board were injured and are in hospital.
