Brazil hospital attacked by armed robbers

Hospital employees and patients were robbed of their valuables by gunmen who stormed a Rio de Janeiro hospital Monday night.

The assault was captured by security cameras.

According to local police, at least five gunmen robbed an estimated 22 patients and staff at the Hospital Norte D'Or.

Police Deputy Jorge Zahra explains.

(SOUNDBITE) (Portuguese) POLICE DEPUTY, JORGE ZAHRA, SAYING:

"Five or six suspects entered the hospital pretending that they needed help. This is why they were not stopped by the doorman. Two of them were armed and two or three collected the valuables, such as cell phones from the people they found accompanying those in need of medical care."

He said a victim was able to identify one of the suspects, and officers were searching the streets for him.

But the incident leaves residents shaken up, like this woman who had to pick up exams from the hospital.
