At least 13 people have been killed after a minibus and a commuter train collided on a level crossing in Ukraine.

Six others were injured in the crash in the northeastern Sumy region, near the border with Russia.

Officials have blamed the bus driver for the collision, saying he ignored warning lights.

Teachers and at least one pupil are said to be among the casualties. They were returning home from school in the bus which was dragged along the tracks.

An investigation has been launched by President Viktor Yanukovych who has sent his condolences.
