Don’t ever discount the power of social media, especially when it comes to saving pets.

Locals in Mexico City recently discovered a German Shepherd left in a parked vehicle. The pickup truck remained in the same spot for three full days with no owner in sight.

Those who were concerned enough about the dog, peeked inside the vehicle and noticed there was no water or food left behind. The vehicle appeared to be unlocked, but residents feared being charged with trespassing or stealing. Instead, they took pictures of the sad looking dog and posted them on social media sites, like Twitter.

The hash tag which translated to RescueThe RomaDog began circulating, calling for someone to save the severely neglected animal. The tweet contained additional information including the license plate of the truck and the street on which it was parked.

It didn’t take long for the Twitter campaign to spread. Firefighters, animal care authorities and police arrived on scene to save the pooch. The dog was taken to a rescue facility for food. He was later transferred to another shelter for veterinary care.

The owner of the truck was soon charged with animal cruelty. The Shepherd is under the care of the state, however many have come forward asking to adopt him.
