Amanda Knox's ex-boyfriend said Friday that he was out of Italy when he got the stunning news that they had been re-convicted of her roommate Meredith Kercher's brutal murder, and he immediately returned with the intent to surrender his passport. But Raffaele Sollecito said that before he could get to a police station, officers swooped down on him in a hotel in Italy, near the border, woke him up and took him in. Sollecito, 29, said he was so certain that he and Knox would be acquitted that he had already planned a trip out of the country. When he got the news that he had been convicted again and sentenced to 25 years, he was floored.
Justin Bieber's private jet was detained at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey early Friday afternoon when law enforcement sources detected a "strong odor of pot." Bieber had flown in from Toronto to celebrate Super Bowl, and sources told the paper that a Customs and Border Protection dog sniffed out pot in two suitcases. However, NBC later tweeted that officials found nothing in their search of Beiber's jet. Bieber is due back in a Miami court February 14th to face charges stemming from a January 23rd arrest.
India's Supreme Court Friday directed West Bengal's chief secretary to submit a detailed report on the gang rape of a 19-year-old tribal girl in the state's Birbhum district. A bench of Chief Justice P. Sathasivam, Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice M.Y. Eqbal said that they were not satisfied with the report sent by the Birbhum district judge as it had no information on action taken by the authorities. The court said that on its Jan. 24 order, Birbhum's district judge, along with the chief judicial magistrate and a team of people inspected the place in question and submitted a report to the apex court.
