Erotic timepieces have only gained popularity and dollar value over time to include a modern-day version priced at $1.6 million.
Believe it or not, the origins of erotic timepieces or so-called “pocket porn” are somewhat romantic. As pocket watches became popular and couples were sometimes separated for long periods of time, people would have their spouse’s face included in a sexual scene usually hidden behind the dial. While that specific practice may have faded, the objects themselves have only gained popularity and dollar value to include a modern-day version priced at $1.6 million.
From pocket watches to wrist watches, these erotic collectibles vary in size, shape, and design, but the graphic sex scenes are usually hand-painted and animated with careful attention to detail. Typically, a knob is twisted to unhide the image.
Vintage pieces are easily being sold at auctions for thousands of dollars. One particular enameled pocket watch that dated back to 1810 and featured 18-karat gold and animation was recently won for more than $220,000.
The most impressive modern version has to be Jacob & Company’s one-of-a-kind “Caligula” wrist watch that features triangular diamonds and an animated image hidden behind a diamond dial.
If you can’t afford the $1.6 million price tag, the company is also offering a limited edition of 69 standard Caligula watches in yellow or rose gold for $69,000.
