STORY: Former French first lady Valerie Trierweiler met poor children in Mumbai Tuesday as a part of her humanitarian work in her first visit after a highly publicized separation with President Francois Hollande.
The 48-year-old journalist traveled to India on Sunday (January 26) in honor of an anti-hunger charity - Fight Hunger Foundation.
She walked through a sprawling Mumbai slum and spoke to several children, holding some in her lap, as she took a first hand look at one of the most impoverished regions of India's financial capital.
Statistics from various development agencies highlight increasing number of underweight children and stunted growth among children along with poor nutrition among women, high maternal mortality rates and incidences of non-communicable diseases in India.
According to the World Bank, the prevalence of malnutrition among children in India is among the highest in the world.
