The United States military is reportedly trying to give away around 13 thousand armored trucks that were used by troops in Afghanistan.

Private citizens and businesses are not allowed to own the trucks, but they are being offered to friendly foreign governments and law enforcement offices after being brought back to US soil.
200 of the trucks, worth half a million dollars new, have been delivered to local police departments, and there are 750 requests still pending.
Captain John Crouse from the Florence County, South Carolina Sheriff's Department is quoted as saying: “The price was right because it was free and it fit with what we need it to do. It stops bullets. It keeps you from getting shot.”
Not many foreign governments have been taking up the offer, which might have something to do with the high cost of maintenance on these kinds of vehicles, especially after being driven around the deserts of Afghanistan on military tours and missions.
The companies that were involved with the construction of the armored vehicles were banking on revenue from maintenance costs provided by the US military, and now that the vehicles are being stored or given away and some may even be scrapped, the sales market is shrinking.
