Ukraine government says peaceful efforts to solve crisis 'in vain'

Ukraine’s interior minister has said the government’s efforts to resolve the political crisis peacefully have been in vain.

The truce has been violated, Vitaliy Zakharchenko added, accusing anti-government demonstrators of stockpiling weapons and radical groups of using force.

The Kyiv rally continues despite temperatures of minus 20 and the president’s promise to amend anti-protest laws and reshuffle his cabinet.

“Yanukovych is really out of his mind. He is living in his own dreamworld – full of the illusions of his own gang. He does not understand what is going on. And he should realise this: this is the end of your rule,” said one protester.

The police have threatened to storm Kyiv city hall. They accuse protesters of holding two officers hostage. The opposition denies the claims.

Amnesty International says it’s concerned for the wellbeing of an opposition activist believed to have been abducted.

The protests have spread beyond the capital. Demonstrators have occupied several government buildings in western Ukraine.
