Recent years have seen a growing trend in owning genetically modified miniature animals such as the pygmy goat and micro pig. When a Toronto couple discovered their micro pig was actually a young regular pig, they decided to keep her and, through social media, launched her into celebrity status.

Admitting they didn’t do their homework, Steve Jenkins and Derek Walter were told the 6-month-old micro pig they were buying would grow to at most 80 pounds. A vet visit confirmed she was only 6 weeks old and not a micro pig.

Regardless of being misled and the amount of hard work required, the pig they named “Esther” was already family. Esther now weighs 300 pounds, and, after a little difficulty with house-training, seems to be enjoying her home that includes a one-third acre lot.

Esther’s YouTube channel and Facebook page were created to share pictures and videos with friends and family. They ended up going viral and global with tens of thousands of likes.

Jenkins and Walter say they want to use those social platforms to encourage people not to eat pork and beware of scams. One day, they hope to open a sanctuary for pigs without proper homes.
