Rohingya rights group protest in London

4 years ago87 views

The message was clear: the international community has blood on its hands.

After days of denial by officials in Myanmar it was confirmed by one of the only aid groups who reached Maungdaw township that there was evidence of a mass killing, the death of dozens of Rohingya in Arakan State adding to a mounting body count since the state-supported attack of Muslim minority by Buddhist extremists began in 2012.

Britain’s role in determining what happens in Myanmar cannot be overstated. As the former colonial power in the region – London still has enormous political influence and by applying the right amount of pressure could further avert a humanitarian crisis.

Britain has yet to offer any public condemnation of the situation in Myanmar but did discuss growing trade links with the country as well as confirm the training of high-ranking army officials by British military personnel.

Campaigners say as long as the UK continues to put trade interests above the lives of nnocent men, women and children in Myanmar then nothing will change.
