China has a major problem with air pollution caused by manufacturing and a lack of industrial regulations.

A new study from researchers at the Peking University in Beijing, working with scientists from universities in the United States and Britain has found that air pollution from China is reaching the west coast of the United States and contributing to smog and air quality problems on that side of the country.

Steve Davis, a scientist at the University of California, Irvine and co-author of the study said: “We've outsourced our manufacturing and much of our pollution, but some of it is blowing back across the Pacific to haunt us. Given the complaints about how Chinese pollution is corrupting other countries' air, this paper shows that there may be plenty of blame to go around.”

The US, along with other countries in Europe depend on cheap exports from China, but the environmental costs are the subject of international controversy.

Data from the study shows that almost a quarter of sulfate pollution on the west coast can be linked to exports from China.
