Talented fashion designer Nishka Lulla and India Kids Fashion Week (IKFW) teamed up with PETA India to promote our humane-education programme, Compassionate Citizen. Lulla's show, which was the grand finale at IKFW, was dedicated to Compassionate Citizen. During the show, PETA's "elephant" displayed the message "Be an Elefriend -- Be Kind to Animals".
The show started with a video of Lulla talking about how close this campaign is to her heart. "My show is dedicated to helping kids develop empathy for animals", Lulla said. "Humane education is extremely important since kids who are kind to animals often grow up to be kind and compassionate adults."
Compassionate Citizen was designed to help children between the ages of 8 and 12 develop respect and compassion for animals as well as for the environment in which they live. The programme has been used voluntarily in more than 18,000 private and government schools and has reached more than 3.6 million children across India. Recently, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) issued a notification to CBSE schools asking them to use it as an official part of their curricula. The Animal Welfare Board of India -- a statutory body under the Ministry of Environment and Forests -- has also asked the state and union territory education ministers to incorporate Compassionate Citizen into their official curricula.
