Spain Breaks Record for Wind Energy as Primary Source of Power

Spain has become the first country to use wind power as their primary source of energy.

In 2013, energy from wind farms made up 20 point 9 percent of the power used by Spain, with nuclear power in close second providing 20 point 8 percent.

Renewable energy sources reportedly make up a total of 42 point 4 percent of the power used by Spain with just over 14 percent of the country’s energy coming from hydroelectric power, and just over 3 percent from solar power.

The use of wind power increased by 13 point 2 percent from the previous year, producing a record setting 54,478 Gigawatt hours of electricity.

The Spanish Wind Energy Association released a statement saying: “Spain is the first country in the world where wind energy was the technology that most contributed to the coverage of demand in a full year.”

Although nuclear power plants technically produced more energy than the wind farms during 2013, the electricity it takes to run a nuclear power plant gave wind the upper hand.

What do you think about Spain becoming the first country to have sustainable wind power as their primary source of energy?
