    Syrian refugees flee through forest then face tough conditions in poorest EU member state

    Syrian refugees fleeing the war are paying traffickers to smuggle into Europe. The route for some is via Bulgaria, crossing through a vast forest between it and Turkey.

    But the EU’s poorest member country is ill-equipped to deal with the deluge of displaced people. Conditions are tough and the refugees don’t want to stay in Bulgaria.
