Researchers are reportedly testing an unmanned robotic vehicle called the Black Night Transformer that is designed for use by the United States military to function as a drone, a helicopter, and a truck.

The vehicle has both a driving and a flying mode, and it can change appearance based on what it’s being used for, tucking away the 8 helicopter like rotors when it needs to drive.

Designed and built by El Segundo, California based firm Advanced Tactics, the vehicle has proven it can drive in off road conditions, but tests of the flying capabilities are scheduled for February 2014.

If flight tests are successful, the Black Night transformer will be used to evacuate wounded soldiers, or resupply troops in the field without risking the lives of a flight crew.

Advanced Tactics chief engineer Rustom Jehangir is quoted as saying: “The U.S. Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory is interested in using the Black Knight vehicle for unmanned cargo resupply missions. They've done work on this in the past with other platforms, such as the Lockheed Martin K-Max, but our platform will be much less expensive.”

Having the option to fly or drive means that rescue missions can be carried out in a variety of locations, with more exit strategies.
