A medical emergency mid-flight is a nightmare scenario.

Two nurses who had been traveling during the holiday season, just happened to be at the right place at the right time and ended up saving a working pilot’s life.

The flight going from Des Moines to Denver on December 30th, 2013 was about 30,000 feet in the air, when the pilot required the medical help.

A troubling announcement was made, asking passengers if anyone onboard had medical experience.

The two nurses, Amy Sorenson, from Wyoming and California based Linda Alweiss, volunteered, not knowing what to expect, but ready to help. They were led to the pilot, and found him slumped over the cockpit.

His responsiveness was minimal and his heart was beating erratically. They along with other concerned passengers pulled the pilot into the galley.

The nurses were then able to administer an IV. They continued to monitor and care for him, while the female co-pilot handled the plane.

In the end, they all landed safely where paramedics were waiting for the pilot. He survived.

Sorenson downplayed their actions stating “We just jumped. Knowing that the patient needed care, we just jumped into our roles."
