Workers at numerous supermarkets in Berlin got a big shock after realizing cocaine had been concealed inside of boxes holding bananas.

There is a good reason why grocery store employees inspect shipments of food before placing the items out on display. Workers at numerous supermarkets in Berlin got a big shock after realizing cocaine had been concealed inside of boxes holding bananas.

Police claimed the drug smugglers made a "logistical error" somewhere in their planning, causing the cocaine shipment to be sent to five stores spread out in Germany’s capital.

The cartons containing the fruit were part of a large, 11 hundred box order. They were brought to Germany by ship from Colombia.

The bananas were sent to Hamburg and then subsequently delivered to a fruit wholesaler prior to arriving at the supermarkets. Seven of the cartons were loaded with cocaine.

With a street value of over $8 million, the illegal discovery is being referred to as Berlin’s largest in 15 years.

The head of the city’s drug investigation department stated “We were of course surprised. I don't know where the mistake was in the perpetrators' delivery chain.”

The intended destination of the drugs remains unknown. The 300 pounds of cocaine will be stored and later destroyed.
