US charges Indian diplomat

The Indian diplomat whose arrest and strip search in the U.S. sparked a major rift between the two countries has been formally indicted.

Devyani Khobragade's accused of visa fraud and lying about underpaying a domestic worker.

At the same time she was given diplomatic immunity and told to leave the country.

India's foreign ministry says she's been given a new job back home.

SOUNDBITE (English) SPOKESPERSON OF INDIA'S FOREIGN MINISTRY, SYED AKBARUDDIN, SAYING:

"The U.S government requested the Government of India to waive the immunity of counsellor (Devyani) Khobragade. On 9th January 2014, the Government of India declined to do so and transferred counsellor Khobragade to the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi. She has since departed for home."

Khobragade was deputy consul-general in New York when she was arrested in December.
