A priest was given a special treat at the Vatican on Wednesday (January 8), when Pope Francis invited him to jump onto the back of the popemobile for a ride around St. Peter's square.

The incident happened as the pontiff was being driven through the crowds who had gathered for his weekly general audience.

A priest of seemingly South American nationality was allowed to walk through the barricades and approach the pope.

Pope Francis, know for his 'human touch', appeared unbothered by the break in protocol and gesticulated to the priest to join him in the popemobile for a ride around the square.

After his election last March, Francis immediately set about changing the Vatican's image with his simple style.

Showing little regard for tradition, he renounced the spacious papal suite for a modest apartment in a Vatican guest house, and is driven around in a simple Ford Focus instead of a bulletproof Mercedes limousine.
