Security increased with just a month to go until Sochi Winter Olympics

Just 30 days to go now before Russia hosts the most expensive Winter Olympics of all time in Sochi. The countdown clock in Moscow is informing Muscovites their turn in the global spotlight is just round the corner, but some worry the Olympics might all go wrong, while others think security has gone into overdrive.

“After what happened in Volgograd, tight security in needed,” said one woman.

“Maybe it’s too much in some places, but I don’t think they can hold the games without it,” said one man.

Around 75,000 security personnel will be on hand to ensure the games go smoothly, and from Tuesday the whole Sochi region falls under special powers for the duration of the games, with strictly controlled movement and frequent identity checks. Russia wants everyone who comes to feel at ease.

“No, I think it feels very good to feel safe where you are and I think there is definitely a sense that we have here in Sochi, that we feel good, we feel safe,” said visitor Nathan Wright.

Islamic militants based in the Caucasus have vowed to disrupt the games, but no-one has yet claimed responsibility for the double bombing in Volgograd just before the new year.
