Political parties provide the connection between politics and society. They develop policies and programs. They also pick up demands from society and bundle them into packages. They are able to discuss and evaluate these issues and shape human needs into policy alternatives. In so doing they are an important part of the political process. There are over 240 registered and legal parties in Iran.
Iran’s new administration, led by President Hassan Rouhani, has intended to gradually move towards supporting Non-government Organizations and political parties in order to support people’s role in running the country. Following such tendency, on Saturday, the heads or representatives of more than 60 Iranian parties attended a meeting with the interior minister. They made their demands and talked about their expectations from the administration. "Based on Iran's constitution, the parties must have a crucial role in running the country. We expect President Rouhani's administration to establish a mechanism through which the parties will be able to perform such role. The legal parties expect the officials to facilitate their participation in making decisions", says Amir Sheikhiani, Secretary General of Iran's People's Party.
The interior minister says the administration is determined to support the parties, but the parties should not put all the burden on administration’s burden. "The administration is willing to support and empower the parties. But the parties must gather together and for the first step, they should revive the House of Parties. Then they can express their views in a more organized and effective way", says Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli, Iran's Interior Minister.
Parties’ activities lead to political justice and empowering them will result in stronger connections between people and the government. Meanwhile, political culture must be developed among people so that they get engaged in political activities.
