Ferrari fans have held a vigil for Michael Schumacher to mark his 45th birthday.

Dozens of people gathered outside the French hospital in Grenoble where Formula One’s most decorated driver ever is in a medically induced coma after a skiing accident on Sunday.

Many here say they wanted to share the family’s sorrow after he gave them so much joy on the track.

One Italian Ferrari fan said: “We are here to tell him ‘Go, Michael!’ He gave us Ferrari fans so much satisfaction. Once you join Ferrari, you’ll be in the hearts of true fans like us forever.”

“I’m not worried or anything because I know he is going to pull through, I’m sure of it. He’s a fighter, he’s a champion,” said one French Ferrari fan.

Supporters of the Scuderia Ferrari Club wore their team’s red colours and carried a banner reading “Schumi, All our thoughts for you and your family”.

On Thursday, Schumacher’s family thanked fans for their “great support”. Doctors say his condition remains critical but stable and although he has showed signs of improvement since his fall in the French Alps on Sunday; he is still not yet out of danger.
