An investigation is now underway after a Metro bus fatally struck its female driver. In the traumatic and bizarre ordeal, the operator of the vehicle , 47-year-old Thomasine Maria Smith had exited her bus on New Hampshire Avenue in Silver Spring, Maryland in order to take a work allotted break.

For unknown reasons, the bus rolled forward. Instead of running away from it, Smith rushed to the bus and attempted to reach through the driver’s window to hit the break. Sadly, she wasn’t successful.

The vehicle pinned her against a concrete retaining wall. Smith was swiftly transported to the nearest hospital. Initially her condition was listed as serious but it turned to critical very quickly.

Only hours after the accident occurred, Smith was pronounced dead at the trauma center. A Metro spokesperson confirmed the incident, saying Smith did indeed ‘succumb to her injuries’.

At the time of the crash, the bus was not in service and therefore contained no passengers. Authorities are hoping surveillance footage from the bus may provide more insight for investigators.
