The state of Florida is on its way to passing New York as the third most populous state in the US after California and Texas.

According to the latest estimates from the United States Census Bureau, if Florida’s population continues to grow at the projected rate, they will have a larger population than New York in the next year or two.

Both states had around 19 and a half million residents according to last years census poll, and they both reportedly have growing populations.

But more people are moving to Florida for various reasons like work or retirement and they reportedly had a population growth rate of 2 point 7 percent from April of 2010 to 2012, compared to New York’s one percent population increase.

More than 50 thousand New Yorkers move to sunny Florida every year, which is two times more than the number of people moving from Florida to New York.

The change could affect the number of seats that the two states hold in the US House of Representatives.

Census data from 2010 caused New York to lose two seats, while Florida gained two.
