Michael Schumacher, one of the world’s best known high-speed sportsmen, continues his battle for life after suffering severe head injuries in a skiing accident.

Doctors at the hospital in the French city of Grenoble operated to treat the internal bleeding and prevent swelling of his brain inside the skull.

They say they cannot predict the outcome.

Outside the hospital fans wait in hope. One said: “When I heard the news that he had been hospitalised in Grenoble, I came straight away, I had to come.”

Another added: “I am worried like all of you and all the fans, supporters, but I still hope and I will pray for him.”

Doctors said the seven-times Formula One world champion is only alive now because he was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

Schumacher remains in a medically-induced coma and his body temperature has been lowered to slow the metabolism and help reduce inflammation of his brain.
