Second icebreaker on its way to trapped Antarctica ship

A ship stuck in ice near Antarctica is waiting for a second rescue attempt, after a Chinese icebreaker failed to free it.

The ‘Snow Dragon’ was stalled by heavy ice and could not reach the 74 passengers on board the stuck MV Akademik Shokalskiy.

Now an Australian vessel, Aurora Australis, is on its way.

The trapped Russian ship is 185 kilometres east of Dumont D’Urville, a French Antarctic research station.

The ship ran into trouble on December 25 after leaving New Zealand on November 28.

On board the MV Akademik Shokalskiy is the Australasian Antarctic Expedition. They had been following the route taken by explorer Douglas Mawson a century ago.

There are also some tourists.

Experiments are continuing and there is plenty of food and vital supplies.
