One student dead reported dead in Egypt university clashes

State TV in Egypt has broadcast pictures of Al-Azhar University after fires damaged at least two buildings on the Cairo campus.

The blazes started after clashes between security forces and students earlier.

It’s understood police fired tear gas to disperse pro-Muslim Brotherhood students, who responded by setting tyres on fire, to try to disperse the gas, and throwing rocks.

A newspaper claims the pro-Brotherhood students were preventing colleagues entering classrooms to take exams.

Clashes across Egypt yesterday left five people dead.

Supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood took to the streets after Egypt’s government designated the group a ‘terrorist organisation’.

Security forces used tear gas to try to quell the disturbances.

Over 250 Brotherhood supporters were arrested under the new designation.
