A Chinese icebreaker on its way to rescue a Russian ship trapped in Antarctica has itself been stalled by thick ice – and forced to turn back.

The MV Akademik Shokalski, which became stranded on December 24, has 74 passengers on board.

An Australian rescue vessel is expected to arrive on Sunday, December 29.
