Last minute rushing around during the holiday season is enough to get you in a bad mood, but landing a traffic ticket during this time can easily put anyone in Grinch mode. Fully understanding the frustration of motorists in the days before Christmas, police in Melbourne, Florida took a unique approach to pre-holiday traffic stops.

Instead of writing up citations, the officers purchased scratch off lottery tickets with their own money. Then during the stops, the cops handed out those potentially money winning tickets to drivers along with the routine wallet hitting ones.

The sole purpose of the move was to spread a little cheer. By 1 in the afternoon on Christmas day, roughly 30 scratchoffs had been handed to drivers.

The local sergeant stated “We're just doing a little bit of a different technique…… It's something good to do in light of the holidays. We're getting a lot of surprised looks…people don't know what to say.”

It remains unknown if any of the tickets were winners, however the department wished the motorists only the best of luck.
