According to one study, couples might be breaking up around Christmas more than any other time of year.

The data comes from a survey of Facebook status updates that feature the phrase, “we broke up because…”, indicating that a couple has recently ended their relationship.

A graph of peak break up times, created in 2008 by researchers David McCandless and Lee Byron working on a book called The Visual Miscellaneum, show that particular phrase was used by more people during the two weeks before Christmas than other times of year.

There are many possible reasons for couples to break up around the holidays including social pressure to attend events that might not be fun, but are important to a significant other like family or work parties.

Or the financial pressures of shopping for expensive gifts that might entail a certain level of commitment, depending on the amount of money spent.

These kinds of pressures can apparently make or break a relationship, because December is also reportedly the month with the highest number of engagements according to TheKnot.com.

What do you think? Why do more couples break up around the holidays than other times of the year?
