Officials in the City of Fairfax, Virginia near Washington D.C. have voted to approve a measure that will control deer populations in the area by surgically spaying female deer.

As the suburban population in the area expands into wildlife habitats, deer start to become an important consideration because of the dangers they pose to vehicle traffic, local vegetation and as possible disease carriers.
Because of the housing and population density, hunting in the City of Fairfax was considered at a single golf course, but the city council ultimately declined to support controlled hunts.
The project proposes that female deer be tranquilized, and taken to have their ovaries surgically removed at a cost of about one thousand dollars per doe.
It has private funding and will be implemented by the nonprofit group White Buffalo, Inc., which has already started similar programs in New York, Missouri, and California.
Doctor Anthony DeNicola, co-founder and President of White Buffalo said: “We feel comfortable that the animals are treated humanely and that we can do this in a reasonably efficient manner.”
Similar projects have successfully lowered deer populations without the use of hunting.
