U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power visited the Central African Republic Thursday in a diplomatic mission to help end serve sectarian violence. 4283

Power visited hospitals and churches and met with senior government officials and said those responsible for months of violence must be brought to justice. 4283

(SOUNDBITE)(English) U.S. AMBASSADOR TO THE U.N. SAMANTHA POWER, SAYING:

"Obviously the Central African Republic does not have in place right now or has not yet pursued the kinds of investigations and the kind of accountability that is needed but we stressed that those responsible for atrocities must be held accountable, that is a very important element of preventing future violence and cycles of violence."

A coup earlier this year by a group of Muslim rebels unleashed a wave of looting, rapes and massacres that turned into clashes with Christian militias.
