Harvard University researchers found that a couple days of overloading on meat and cheese can have a profound and almost immediate impact on a person’s gut bacteria.

For the study they gathered volunteers and subjected them to two different diet regimens.

In the first, they enjoyed a five-day meat-lovers feast. Breakfast was eggs and bacon, lunch was all about ribs and brisket, and dinner was an assortment of cured meats and cheeses.

Those hungry between meals were instructed to snack on pork rinds.

Following a break, they began the second diet and meal options weren’t as out there – granola in the morning and rice, cooked vegetables and lentils for the afternoon and evening meals. Bananas and mangos were offered throughout the day.

When tested, the fruit and fiber diet didn’t cause significant changes in the volunteers’ gut bacteria and microbe make-up.

During the extreme meat plan, however the subjects were found to have developed an abnormally high amount of Bilophila, which has been linked to inflammation and colitis in mice.

The good news from the results is that the findings confirm rapid change is possible. Scientists believe that could someday lead to being able to quickly control microbe-related intestinal illnesses through diet.
