French troops have arrested several suspected gunmen as part of their mission to disarm rival Muslim and Christian fighters in the Central African Republic.

France’s military claims to have restored some stability in its former colony following a wave of religious violence which has left over 460 dead in the capital Bangui alone since last Thursday.

The Central African Republic has spiralled into chaos since the mainly Muslim Seleka rebels seized power in March and went on a rampage of looting and killing.

Five days ago Christian militias loyal to ousted president Francois Bozize attacked the capital.

France under UN authorisation has boosted its military presence to help African peacekeepers struggling to restore order.

The US says it has will provide transport aircraft to carry troops to the country from Burundi to support the French-led effort.
