Sweeney Todd, or the Demon Barber of Fleet Street (1936)

Old-school British stage actor Tod Slaughter's career stretched over 50 years, but the most popular of his many roles on provincial playbills was the notorious "demon barber", a role he recreated on the screen with all his old-fashioned dastardly villain gusto intact. Both the acting and the production values might seem even older than the mid-1930s, but Slaughter's entertainingly gleeful enthusiasm carries it (and his victims) off.
