Those needing a little help staying away from calorie-laden holiday baked goods – and a bevy of other temptations - may want to consider turning to prayer.

Those needing a little help staying away from calorie-laden holiday baked goods – and a bevy of other temptations - may want to consider turning to prayer.

A recent study revealed that even, “a brief period of personal prayer” helps keep all sorts of demons at bay.

The research was carried out by two German psychologists who enlisted 79 participants.

Among the subjects 41 were Christians, 24 identified as being atheist or agnostic, and the rest listed themselves as ‘other’.

Going into the tests half of them were instructed to pray. The rest were left to their own unguided thoughts.

Next, half of the prayers and thinkers were asked to suppress all emotion as they watched funny videos, while half could respond naturally.

Last was the administering of a proven litmus test of self-control - a Stroop test. That’s the one where the word for a color is presented in a conflicting hue and immediate identification responses are mandatory.

In the end, those who had used up all of their restraint by not laughing performed poorly with the exception of those who had begun the exercises with a moment of prayer.
