After a orgy of robberies, looting and violence, law and order is said to have been restored to the city of Cordoba in Argentina.

Residents had taken advantage of a strike by police to ransack shops and offices. Three deaths were reported.

Once the authorities agreed to police demands over pay and staffing, officers returned to work.

Governor Jose Manuel de la Sota said the province’s police will now be the best-paid in the nation.

But the violence suggests how easily social conflicts can erupt in Argentina, where most cities are surrounded by slums.
