STORY: As night fell in Bangkok on Monday, anti-government protesters attempted to use a bulldozer to break through barricades at Government House.

Police shot tear gas canisters at the vehicle as it faced the concrete blocks and protesters rushed to contain the smoke.

Protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban said Sunday was a day of victory for the anti-government group over Yingluck Shinawatra's administration.

Violent battles erupted in parts of Bangkok, but the protesters made little progress in shutting down the government.

Suthep has set a new Tuesday deadline for Yingluck to step aside and his movement has called for civil servants to go on strike.

Earlier on Monday, Yingluck reiterated her offer for talks with the opposition, but Suthep has been adamant in rejecting her offer.
