Eurozone youth unemployment hits record high of 24.4%

More than 19 million people are unemployed across the eurozone.
Although the overall rate fell slightly in November – to 19.2 million, from 19.3 million in October – youth unemployment continued to soar.
The number of jobless under-25s hit a record high of 24.4 percent in November.
In the hardest-hit countries, more than half of young people are out of work.
Spain’s rate reached 57.4 percent in November – close to Greece’s August high of 58 percent, which was the highest rate of youth unemployment for any country in the eurozone’s history.
In Italy, the rate rose to 41.2 percent in November. In Portugal it climbed to 36.5 percent.
The dire figures from southern Europe are a stark contrast to those in the north. In November Germany had a youth unemployment rate of 7.8 percent, while it was 11.6 percent in the Netherlands.
