Police in West Virginia have recently issued a warning concerning a group of scammers who posed as paving contractors. . The notice comes after an elderly couple lost over $2,000.

It all started when the older pair was approached by four men who claimed to work for a company called “Smith’s paving”. The workers offered to apply a special top coat to the couple’s driveway for $800.

The men claimed they had just completed work on a neighbor’s property. The homeowners agreed and allowed the men to finish the job, then paid them the full asking price for the service.

Just one day after the driveway work was done, a fifth man showed up at the couple’s door, dressed as a police officer, and told them the money which they had given to the pavers was counterfeit. The fake cop then said he needed to inspect all the cash in their residence and take it to the station for testing.

That man took $2,000 of the couple’s money. The real police were eventually alerted of the incident and confirmed it was indeed a scam. Law enforcement authorities believe the five men work together as part of a ring of fraudsters typically in the Bluefield and Princeton areas.
