UN sets fresh date for Syria peace talks

A fresh date for talks aimed at bringing an end to the ongoing conflict in Syria has been set for January 22.

Negotiations will take place in Geneva according to the United Nations.

It is unclear who will attend and there is no mention of whether Iran will be invited.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon expects regional and international partners to fully support the “Geneva 2” peace moves.

Ban has made it clear to both sides in the conflict that Geneva 2 is a serious attempt to end the war that has left more than 100,000 people dead and driven millions from their homes.

Geneva 2 will seek the formation of a transitional government with full executive powers based on mutual consent.

If the talks go ahead it will be the first time the Syrian government and the various rebel groups have sat at the same table after close to three years of carnage.
