French photographer Pierre Borghi escaped from captivity Monday night after being kidnapped in Afghanistan four months ago.

As Reuters reported, "Borghi had been chained up in a crudely dug hole covered by a trap door but managed to escape and reached a checkpoint manned by government security guards in central Wardak province, an Afghan official said."

After Afghan security forces picked up 29-year-old Borghi at the checkpoint, he was brought to the Interior Ministry's headquarters in Kabul.

He was in good health and one of the first things he asked for was a cup of coffee, ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said.

Borghi was kidnapped by four armed men in a street in Kabul on November 28, 2012. His captors told him that they belonged to various groups such as, Taliban, Haqqani and al Qaeda. They held him in different locations, including the back of a vehicle, the official said.
