200,000 Highly Toxic Toy Dolls Confiscated by US Customs

The U.S. Customs and Boarder Protection and the Consumer Product Safety Commission have seized $500,000 worth of toy dolls at 8 different U.S. ports during the last 6 months.
The Oregon Environmental Council is trying to pass a bill that makes children’s product manufacturers list potentially toxic chemicals and gradually eliminate the most dangerous ones.
Most recently, the U.S. Customs and Boarder Protection and the Consumer Product Safety Commission have seized $500,000 worth of toy dolls at 8 different U.S. ports during the last 6 months.
Tests confirmed the 200,000 dolls contained high levels of one or more of 6 phthalates banned for use in toys. These chemicals that make plastics flexible or give products and fragrances more staying power can be found in everything from detergent to raincoats.
The Oregon Environmental Council’s Chris Hagerbaumer said phthalates “do flush out of the system, but because we're exposed to them every day in so many products ... we're getting too high of a rate of phthalates in our bodies.”
According to the CDC’s website, they don’t know what low-level phthalate exposure does to health. However, Hagerbaumer says research proves it’s responsible for everything from impacting baby’s development in the womb to dramatically increasing childhood asthma rates.
While the proposed bill has been passed in the House, it is delayed in the Oregon Senate.
