First fuel rod extracted at Japan's stricken Fukushima nuclear plant

Engineers at Japan’s stricken Fukushima nuclear plant have removed the first of the site’s fuel rods.

The delicate and risky work will take around two days to clear the 22 fuel rod assemblies.

The decision was taken in order to stabilise the site that was damaged by the twin earthquake tsunami that struck Japan in 2011.
