Between 1977 and 1980, Joseph Paul Franklin committed more than a dozen bank robberies and 22 racially-motivated murders.
Between 1977 and 1980 Joseph Paul Franklin committed more than a dozen bank robberies and 22 murders.
Franklin was already serving a life sentence at a federal penitentiary in Illinois for four of those killings when he confessed to the 1977 sniper shooting that took place outside of a synagogue in St. Louis.
His reason for opening fire on the 200 bar mitzvah guests leaving the building was that they were Jewish.
In an interview conducted prior to his scheduled execution, Franklin said all of his crimes were part of his three-year mission to ignite a race war, one that he believed was necessary to ensure the survival of white people.
Other lives he took include an interracial couple, a woman who said she once dated a Jamaican man, and two boys, ages 13 and 14, simply because of the color of their skin.
Franklin’s most well known target was Hustler founder Larry Flynt, who survived the gunshot but was rendered paralyzed from the waist down by it.
The reason behind shooting Flynt was that he published pictures of a black man and a white woman together in a 1975 issue.
